UPM has taken a leading role in the development of water footprinting in the paper industry. At our Nordland Papier mill, around 99% of the water footprint comes from the paper subcontracting chain, and only 1% from the paper mill's actual production processes.
Paper meets all the key fundamental elements of sustainability:
it is made of renewable raw material, totally recyclable and biodegradable.
Forest Full of Life. Biodiversity is our business. UPM as THE Biofore company creates value from natural, renewable and recyclable materials. Biofore means the integration of the bio and forest industries. Bio communicates the future of UPM. Fore stands for the forest and being in the forefront.
UPM's three Finnish mills produce some 1 million tonnes of long-fibre pulp from pine and spruce and just under 1 million tonnes of short-fibre birch pulp, while the Uruguay mill produces in excess of 1 million tonnes of short-fibre eucalyptus pulp.
Wood is a real chemical factory, the full potential of which is still undoubtedly yet to be discovered. UPM is interested in products whose production can be integrated into the manufacture of pulp and paper.
Biodiversity, put simply, means the variety of life around us and around the planet as a whole. Its vital importance to people the world over is, for many, perhaps not as easy to see or understand as, for instance, clean air or water. How can an obscure endangered insect, smaller than a pinhead and with an equally obscure, unpronounceable scientific name, have any real impact on me?
UPM is one of the pioneering companies aiming towards biodiversity protection. The company signed a Leadership Declaration at a UN meeting in Bonn, Germany, in 2008 and is committed to supporting the UN Convention on Biological Diversity's aim of integrating the business sector to enhance biodiversity.
